Aluminum Railings

In order to re-build your railing using approved materials, you will need to purchase 3/4" square aluminum railing pickets. You may re-use your existing top and bottom railing if they are in good condition.

Here is a response from the company we found had the best prices on approved materials for our Aluminum Railings - Hansen Architectural Systems:
Todd: Thank you for contacting our firm regarding pricing for the replacement of railing sections on your property. Hansen specializes in the manufacturing and installation of aluminum lanai railing. We have been very active in Hawaii for nearly 20 years. We build powder coated or anodized railings for projects in various sizes and configurations. Your existing system is mounted with grout into core pockets in the lanai slab. These railings will have to be cut off flush at the slab and then new core pockets will have to be created for the new railing system. Aluminum railings in close proximity to the beach have a service life of about 40 years. Once the picket fasteners are corroded, the railing framing is no longer functional and must be replaced. You would expect the same service life out of your next generation railing system. The removal of existing railing and coring of new post pockets is not included in the pricing below. We can provide pricing for those functions once a field survey has been completed. The prices below are based on a minimum order of 550 linear feet of railing. Pricing: Materials only: $88.00 per linear foot + GET – delivered to the project Materials and installation: $127.00 per linear foot + GET – installed. (Nov. 7, 2011): On Saturday, December 3rd, the Surfrider Foundation’s O’ahu Chapter will present the 9th Annual John Kelly Environmental Achievement Awards. The celebration will be held at Waimea Valley Pavilion and will feature live music from the Intire Project and a few surprise guests. Tickets are $60 for general admission, $75 at the door and sponsor tables begin at $750. All proceeds will benefit Surfrider’s O’ahu Chapter and their efforts to preserve our coasts. The ceremony is in honor of John Kelly, the legendary waterman and environmental leader who started Save Our Surf and fought to protect Hawai‘i’s coastlines from overdevelopment. Kelly and SOS helped to save 140 surf sites on O’ahu and around the state, while also stopping many destructive developments. Following in his wake, Surfrider’s O’ahu Chapter has worked with other organizations to help preserve Pūpūkea-Paumalu (aka, Save Sunset Beach), Kaka’ako Park and Waimea Valley. The party will feature spirits from Barefoot Wine & Bubbly and a variety of local beers courtesy of Kona Brewing Company. Other sponsors include RevoluSun, Brett & Dee Thomas at Surf 4 Hugs, First Wind, Patagonia, the Kokua Foundation Hawaii, Green Magazine and Nella Media Group. Former Lifetime Achievement Award winner Mark Cunningham will serve as the evening’s emcee. This year’s awardees have done inspiring work to improve their communities and protect our marine environment. Cora Sanchez will be given the Lifetime Achievement Award for her efforts in helping to create the Pūpūkea-Waimea Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD). Cora was also a co-founder of Surfrider’s O’ahu Chapter (along with former winner Peter Cole) and the Friends of Shark’s Cove. Along with installing solar and using recycled building materials at their facilities, Kona Brewing Company continues to support local efforts to protect beaches and coastlines across Hawai‘i. Kyle Thiermann will be given the Professional Surfer Award for creating a five-part video series, Surfing for Change, to encourage individuals to change their life habits to help save the environment. Kyle’s video “Where Is Away? Rock Wall

Before we get into the pictures of the wall, I would like to extend a personal mahalo to those that donated funds to make this wall happen:

This is the entrance to Parking Lot B after the lights have been installed.

As an extension and completion of our fence project, it was determined that a rock wall would complete the project. The Board looked at various designs and determined that this one would look the best.

Beginning of right side parking lot A. I removed the hibiscus plant here on the end where the rock wall would be seen and transplanted it by the walkway where there were voids in the hedge.

Here is where I removed the hibiscus plant from where the wall was being built as it would have blocked the view of the wall. I also removed a crouton plant along the left side of the wall and transplanted it. There is a need for about 4 more hibiscus plants in this area (as seen in the next picture). The next picture is where we did the transplanting of the hibiscus.

NORTH SHORE OF OAHU HAWAII TRANSPORTATION
There are many ways to explore the island of Oahu. Here are a few options:
By Air
Flights from all over the world land at Honolulu International Airport just outside of downtown Honolulu. Alaska Airlines now offers many non-stop flights to and from Alaska. Hawaiian Air, Island Air, American Airlines‚ and Delta Airlines are the major airline carriers serving the islands. Free Wiki-Wiki (Hawaiian for 'quick') shuttle buses run between the Main Terminal and Interisland Terminal every 15 minutes.

A new transportation service on Oahu between Barbers Point and Honolulu, Hawaii (TheBoat is no longer in service).

By Car
Rent a car at the airport and explore the island on your schedule. Haleiwa is only 20 - 30 minutes away from the the airport. Car rentals are available at the airport and various locations downtown. A car is worth having for visits to the North Shore or if you are staying outside of Honolulu/Waikiki. Major Highways (Click on the map for a larger view) which will be posted later. The following are some of the more important major highways on Oahu. Both the common name and the state route number are given here. With the exception of H-1, H-2, and H-3, locals refer to state highways by name, rather than route number.

•H-1 runs from Kahala in East Honolulu west, through downtown Honolulu, past the airport and out to the western suburb of Kapolei where it joins Farrington Highway.
•H-2 runs from the town of Waipahu through Mililani to the town of Wahiawa in Central Oahu.
•H-3 runs from the suburb of Aiea, through the windward communities of Kaneohe and Kailua, to the gate of Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Nimitz Highway/Ala Moana Boulevard (state route 92) runs from Pearl Harbor to Waikiki; it is the main route from the airport to Waikiki.
•Pali Highway (state route 61) runs from downtown Honolulu to the Windward town of Kailua.
•Likelike Highway (state route 63) runs from the Kalihi district of Honolulu to the Windward town of Kaneohe.
•Kalanianaole Highway (state route 72) starts from the east end of H-1 and runs through the East Honolulu suburbs around Makapuu Point, and through the rural community of Waimanalo, ending in Kailua.
•Kamehameha Highway (state routes 99, 80, and 83) is the main highway on Oahu, starting from Pearl Harbor, going through the leeward communities of Aiea and Pearl City, then through Central Oahu, around the North Shore, and along the Windward coast ending at the town of Kaneohe.
•Farrington Highway (state route 93) is two separate roads: the south side starts where H-1 leaves off in Kapolei and leads to the Leeward coast communities of Nanakuli, Waianae, and Makaha, ending at the south end of Kaena Point State Park. The north side starts from Waialua on the North Shore through the community of Mokuleia to the north end of Kaena Point State Park(the road used to go around the point but the part that actually rounded the point has been closed and replaced with a nature preserve. A trail connects the two portions).
•Fort Weaver Road/Kunia Road (state routes 76, 750) goes from Schofield Barracks near Wahiawa south to Ewa Beach.

By Bus"TheBus"
Bus routes for every destination make traveling the island a breeze. Hop on TheBus from the airport via the Ala Moana Mall and head up to Haleiwa. Busses run 24 hours a day and are a great way to see the country side with out having to navigate your way. The Oahu bus system, officially called TheBus, runs between almost all towns and to most tourist destinations. Fare for TheBus is US$2.50 for adults, exact change is compulsory and it will get you anywhere on the island TheBus goes.

There is a 4 day TheBus 'Tourist' pass available from most ABC Stores (like a 7/11) for US $25. Make sure you 'scratch' it correctly before getting on the first TheBus. Also available from ABC Stores and other Waikiki-area shops is a very handy guide to TheBus for US$2.95. ‚Ä®TheBus to Wikiki: routes #19 and #20 run between the airport and Waikiki. The fare is US$2.25 for adults. Exact change is required and space for baggage is limited. When taking TheBus from the airport to Waikiki, make sure the destination sign reads "Waikiki Beach and Hotels". The westbound #19 bus continues to a military installation (Hickam AFB), and Military Police check all passengers for military ID at the gate.

The tram-style "Free Shopping Shuttles" which pick up around Waikiki beach will take you to the Ala Moana Center. Be aware that this shuttle will first take you to Hilo Hattie's flagship tourist shop west of the center. It's free, but not a direct route so if you're not interested in stopping off at Hilo Hattie's you may prefer to look elsewhere for transport as this option will add at least 30 minutes to your commute.

By Bicycle
Rent a bicycle in Honolulu or in Haleiwa and go for a ride! Haleiwa offers a brand new paved two lane bike path from town to Waialua. Lots of other biking trails for the off roader. Take your cruiser to Sunset beach and cruise from surf break to surf break. You can rent a board rack for you bike at most rental shops. Please email with questions concerning rentals on the north shore and in Haleiwa Town. By Motorcycle Rent a motorcycle in Honolulu and cruise up to the North Shore. The destination for all the motorcycle clubs on the island.

By Train
Dole Plantation - Historic train tours through the plantation outside of Haleiwa. This is a great way to see the countryside and enjoy fresh local cuisine. Check out the gift shop, it has some of the best locally made goods on the North Shore! To learn more and to plan a tour: Dole Plantation

Helicopter
Heli Tours is one of them - Heli USA Airways - Special North Shore excursion over Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach and the Banzai Pipeline! Floaties

I hardly ever leave something floating in the water overnight. Currents and winds can make things go away real quick. This is what I found at 6am this morning.

I think I left one of my kids floating just off shore once, but found him before the sun set. There wasn't much of a tide that day, and he was too young to swim so he just sat on the floatie. Good boy!

Their mission:
The mission of the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii is to share Aloha with visitors who have been victims of a crime or other adversities, and to provide follow-up assistance and support in an effort to create a positive memory of their stay in our islands.

Their goal:
Our goal is for every visitor victim, whether from the Mainland, a foreign country, or a neighbor island, to share with their family and friends that, despite an unfortunate incident, the Aloha Spirit of Hawai'i is real and that they can look forward to their next visit to the "Aloha" state.

Their Basic Function:
1) Provide assistance to visitors traumatized by crime or other adversities. Cases can be referred by law enforcement agencies, hospitals, and others.
2) Recruit, train and coordinate the efforts of community volunteers to provide assistance and support to visitors.

You may be aware of this, but I thought it was worth looking at again. How to Kill Mosquitos

I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone. A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons disappeared. The next year I filled a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat whenever I saw mosquitoes. And voila! That worked as well. It worked at a picnic where we sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swing area, and the standing water nearby.

OUR FRIEND'S COMMENTS: I tried this on my deck and around all of my doors. It works - in fact, it killed them instantly. I bought my bottle from Target and it cost me $1.89. It really doesn't take much, and it is a big bottle, too; so it is not as expensive to use as the can of Bug-spray you buy that doesn't last 30 minutes. So, try this, please. It will last a couple of days. Don't spray directly on a wood door (like your front door), but spray around the frame. Spray around the window frames, and even inside the dog house. EARTH FRIENDLY TOO!!!

May 10, 2011 Mud flow

Here is what the mud flow coming in from Kaiaka Beach looks like. It was dramatically dirty. The mud did eventually flow over to our pristene shoreline. The water was murky for about 2-3 days, there was one more day of rain and then after that, the water cleaned up again. The next picture is what it looks like today on May 16 only a week later.

I have seen other pest control companies on the property, but have not seen them more than once. Don't know if that's because of price, they did such a fantastic job and didn't need them again or that they did such a lousy job that the agent didn't want them back. Fence Installation Phase 1 & 2 being worked on

Our fence is being installed by Sam Ramiro. We are more than pleased with his work, his attitude and his clean working crews. We have a condo with more than 100 people on the property at all times, and he worked right along with all of them. Great job Sam. Fence demo & replacement began 4-27-2011

Well, the inhouse work on fence demolition finally began on Wednesday 4-27, The installers began on Thursday 4-28. The work will be done in three phases. Phase 1 is the 220+/- ft. stretch by the barBQ area L shaped approx. length of 120' then L shaped to the 4.5 acre vacant lot about 90'. Phase two is about 300' heading mauka to Haleiwa Rd. through a banyan tree. Phase 3 is the North end of the property by Japanese school Haleiwa Rd. makai to the beach. So far what will be done (if anything) for phase 4 fronting the property along Haleiwa Rd. has not been decided on.

We didn't think that another coat of paint would do any good

There was a lot of graffiti on the fence. I wish they would have used a paint that would have matched better. But then I guess you couldn't call that graffiti

Drapery Rods or Curtain Rods

3-11-11 Tsunami

The tsunami was generated in Japan at around 8:25pm Thursday night (Hawaiian time) 3-10-11 this is when I was notified at our meeting. That would have been about 2-3pm Friday Japan time. There was a magnitude 8.9 earthquake which triggered a tsunami sending a 30' wall of mud into the Eastern shores of Japan. There was a discussion/report on CNBC on insurance in Japan that damage would be in the $800Billions US and that insurance would only cover about $5-7Billion. Government will certainly have to get involved here. I will re-confirm those numbers as the news updates them.

It also sent a 6' wave all the way to the mainland US. On the way there, we got a 6' wave which touched our shores, but did minimal damage to Haleiwa. There was reported Damage to Kona Alii Dr. on the Big Island and to La Marianas and Keehi Lagoon on Sand Island. This article will address only known Haleiwa concerns. The ocean came up to our sea wall, but it did not come over it. Here are some pics of the pipe, tidal changes, the reef and a story about the Haleiwa Boat Harbor. All the pictures below were taken on Friday 3-11-11.

Here the post directly in font of our property is completely exposed due to the receding tide. The post is 40" long from the base of the sand.

Here the tide has made ripples in the sand while it receds. You can see the pipe fom the side completely exposed.

Here in the next few pictures, the water is rushing back out to sea in a raging torrent. The pipe is now completely covered. Time lapse 5 min 30 sec.

The water fronting the pipe went from raging river water to a smooth ocean without hardly a ripple.

The tide went out exposing the entire reef to about 2-3' out of the water, then as the picture below shows, the water rushes back in to cover the reef in about 5 minutes. When I say rushing waters, I mean like it was a raging rapids coming back in and going back out. The whole cycle for draining, exposing the reef, then back in again took about 10-11 minutes.

Then the reef was completely exposed again.

This part of the ramp was destroyed during the tidal surge. According to the Star-Advertiser this morning these docks were 'Tsunami resistant' docks which broke. The article goes on to say:

HALEIWA – The big wave never arrived. But a series of small and powerful surges – as many as 20 – pushed muddy water from the tsunami through the Haleiwa Boat Harbor early this morning.

When the water receded, some of the boats tied up in the inside basin were resting in mud. When the water rushed back, the boats rocked and rolled with the churn. On the fourth surge, portions of a floating dock buckled and snapped away from the embankment.

"Just a tremendous amount of water came in, and you could hear it," Paul Sensano, the harbormaster, said of the crumbling dock. "You could hear it crackling. Crack. Crack. Crack."

The floating dock, which is less expensive than a traditional concrete dock, was designed with a tsunami in mind. The dock is supposed to bend and not break. But it broke today, while an older concrete dock nearby survived intact.

With the advance warning about the tsunami last night, boat captains had plenty of time to assess whether to keep their vessels in the shelter of the harbor and hope for a ripple or go out to sea and avoid the potential impact zone.

Jim Davis took his boat the Lana-Kini named after his life long friend Don K. whose wife's name is Lana and his wife named Jeanie or Kini in Hawaiian out to sea leaving at about 11:30pm. Fred Chun also took the Lia C, a 32-foot fishing boat named for his daughter – his "bag of diamonds" – out to sea before the tsunami hit.

His slip on the floating dock was destroyed.

"If I didn't,`Oh, man,'" he said, looking at the damage this morning. "It would probably still be tied up, but I bet it would be pretty busted up."

Dave Borgman took the Foxy Lady, a 42-foot charter boat, out to sea. His slip was gone, too.

"If we would have been right there," he said, pointing to the empty spot, "we would have been screwed."

Daniel Aitchison was at the harbor last night to check on a friend's boat, the 35-foot Kini, and decided after consulting with his friend that it was probably better to leave it tied up loosely to the floating dock.

"We've come down to see that the dock is destroyed, and the piece where we're on is perfectly fine. You can't get luckier than that," he said, visualizing the stress on the dock and the boats that stayed in the harbor.

"She's sitting 100 percent perfect, so that's just unbelievable," he said.

At one point between the surges, Sensano, the harbormaster, called into KSSK to describe what he was witnessing after hearing accounts on the radio about minimal impact in other parts of the island. But he had to quickly get off the phone, he told the hosts, because water had jumped the embankment and was flowing under his office.

"I'll put it this way. The damage could have been greater," he said this morning. "But it was not. No vessels were lost. No lives were lost. So we're thankful for that much.

"Now we've got to just pick up, clean up, and move on." It was estimated that the damage to the Haleiwa docks would be upwards of $300,000. Here is a KHON-TV2 clip:

I began cleaning the nuts and leaves from the yard and noticed a line of nuts from the beach to the front building. Turns out someone had outlined a football field for their play time.

A tenant for one of the units arrives to the property and discovers that she will need some baby supplies and doesn't know what to do. you need a crib, high chair, play pin and who knows what else. What would you do?

Somehow somebody knew of the company "Paradise Baby Company". They called the company and Kara answers. Later that morning a van shows up with all the baby gear they would need to enjoy their vacation at an affordable price. I mean they sounded good, they were very polite but if I'm going to place a name on our blog, I'd have to see what others have said about them. And, since I had never heard of the company, I decided to do some checking to see what reviews if any, were on this company. Screens

There have been a number of screen repair people here on the property, but a couple have stood out as better than others because of their costs, return policy and easy to work with attitude. Don't get sucked into a $75 charge to estimate your job and then a high cost to create and install the screens because we're way out in the country, then another $75 to honor a warranty in case they prove to you that the damage it's not their fault, which you may have to pay in advance.

This one screen company that deserves your inspection that has roots in our property is Zippy at Island Screens in Waipahu. He takes care of any number of items including Glass, screens and door louvers. He can be reached through his office at 671-5425, by contacting me or at their web site http://www.islandscreen.com or Email them at info@islandscreen.com They have a beautiful new warehouse in Waipahu just below Waikele. They are an established company with obvious plans of being here for awhile. They are also the only company that I have found that can provide the wooden louvers for our front doors. Wooden louvers are spendy because they are made of redwood, but Island Screens has them in sizes we use to match the existing. My advice is to check them out and give them a shot at your upcoming project. I also have Zippys private cell number, so if you cannot reach him at his office, leave a message or call me and I'll get him in touch with you.

Another one is Sy Kaneshiro at Stacy's Mobile Screens. Sy can be reached at 372-4361 he has a mobile trailer that comes to the property and custom builds whatever screens you want to replace. He's been on at least 5 units that I know of and I had him do mine. I was pleased with his price and quality of work.

Here's what you have to start with. What I did was to upgrade to pet screen which gives a thicker weave to your screen and makes it more difficult for kids to damage. I also put in split screens so that they were easier to remove.

Here was my final results:

See the center supports on each screen? then you can see the larger center support around the middle of the screen about 4' up from the bottom. The screens split here and allow you to remove them 1/2 screen at a time. They were heavy duty, well built and affordable. Sy did the work on time and came when he agreed to.

Here are the front and rear photos of the fence by Unit 101 to the vacant lot. The fence is 20' long and in parts 7' tall and drops down to 5'6" tall to match the other fence extending from beach to Haleiwa Rd.

Cover for Electrical Panel Boxes

The covering for the panel boxes can be made one of two ways. A wall box like it was before or it can be made as a shed covering the panels extending beyond the water main for Building B.

If you look at the bottom of the picture on the ground where the cover plate is, this is the water main for Building B. It extends 4' from the wall. If we build a shed to cover the Electricl panel, we need to build the shed to extend over the water main. The width of the panel boxes jus inside the hose bib is 7'9". For estimation purposes I said 8'.

The problem with not covering the entire panel boxes to the ground is because of all the spalling work that we just had to repair around the old panel. Here is a picture of the pipes as they entered into the building slab of Unit 406.

The base of each pipe had completely rusted through. The rusting created the spalling which then translated into a serious need to remove the concrete surrounding the pipes, treating the pipes then patching the concrete slab. This has all now been repaired.

This lid had a corner that had finally lifted almost 1/2" and was just waiting for somebody to kick it. I noticed it some time ago, but today noticed that it got my attention and something needed to be done about it. The bottom was completely rusted out. Good timing.

Most refrigerator temperature settings are labeled 1-5 or 1-9, with freezers sometimes being labeled A-E. The best setting is usually somewhere in the middle. If it's labeled 1-5 try setting it on 3 first, if it's 1-9 than factory settings are normally at 4. If your settings are letters A-E than between B and C should be fine.

The best way to check is by sticking a thermometer in both the refrigerator and the freezer compartments. Your refrigerator should be below 40 F, ideally at 37 F. Your freezer should stay at zero. If middle settings seem too cold or too warm according to the thermometer than adjust the settings until you achieve the proper temperature. Allow 24 hours between each adjustment. These temperatures are important in that they prevent the growth of bacteria and keep your food from spoiling.

If your refrigerator and or freezer has been running at the appropriate temperature for some time and then starts to get warmer than it should be, you may adjust the temperature settings down to keep your food but contact an appliance repairman to assure there is not a problem with the refrigerator before it is not getting cold at all.

If your refrigerator or freezer seems too cold, first decide what seems to be too cold. If items are pushed to the back wall of the refrigerator they may get icy because they are placed closer to where the cold air is circulating in your refrigerator. If everything is too cold then, again, adjust the temperature to save your food but contact an appliance repairman to be sure there isn't a problem with your machine.

If your refrigerator is not cold enough but the freezer compartment seems fine, contact an appliance repairman. This is usually a tell tale sign of a defrost problem. Also keep in mind the environment outside of the refrigerator. If you have a spare refrigerator in your garage it will not function properly if the outside temperature is lower than that of your machine. The same goes for excess heat outside of the refrigerator whether it's in the garage or in the house. There are kits that can be installed for refrigerators that are kept in the garage to avoid a problem with your appliance.

Fence - Wall - Gate

This is the gate that joined Building B to the North wall.

It was all termite eaten and falling down. So we decided to rebuild it.

This was the beginning of the new wall. Specs ended up 6'2" tall, solid grout with re-bar in every cell. Then scratch coated, later with a mahogany gate installed. Here are some pictures of the final product before the painting.

We were able to build the gate out of the mahogany benches that we picked up earlier this year. The gate without the jams included after it was assembled weighed just over 105 lbs.

Back in 1988, Mort Walker author and creative artist for drawing the Beetle Bailey cartoon strip and brother to our own ML or Gramma Lu visited here. I'm currently looking for pictures to mark his trip.

Here is one photo I found with the Doroha family sitting in front of Unit 101. He had drawn pictures for each of them and signed them.

Beetle Bailey makes 60 years old today August 31, 2010
STAMFORD, Conn. — Beetle Bailey is slouching toward retirement age, but the lazy Army private won't be getting rest anytime soon from his tour of duty on newspaper comics pages. The indolent wise guy, whose popularity soared when he enlisted during the Korean War, turns 60 on Saturday.

Mort Walker, who conjured up Beetle and has been putting him on paper every day for all those decades, says he'll continue with his creation until he's no longer able.
"I don't know how I'd be retired," said Walker, 86. "I wake up every day with another idea."

The genial gags by Beetle and the cast of characters — Sarge and his dog, Otto, Gen. Amos Halftrack, Miss Buxley and others — are followed seven days a week by readers in 1,800 newspapers, which is "astronomically huge," said Brendan Burford, comics editor at King Features, the strip's syndicating service.

Charles Schulz, who created and worked on the enormously popular Peanuts strip for nearly 50 years before his death in 2000, came close to Walker's longevity. But "no one has worked on the same strip for 60 years with that kind of consistency," Burford said.

"He's definitely in a pretty seriously elite class," he said.
King Features has been celebrating Beetle's anniversary by running Sunday cartoons by Walker of Beetle re-enacting military events in history, such as celebrating the end of World War II or crossing the Delaware with George Washington. The commemorative strips put Beetle in different venues, but Walker said he has otherwise kept Beetle as is over the decades.

"He's still pretty much lazy," he said. "I haven't changed him a tremendous amount because I think that's his character that I want to keep. He represents the little man in all of us." "Beetle is the embodiment of everybody's resistance to authority, all the rules and regulations which you've got to follow," Walker said. "He deals with it in his own way. And in a way, it's sort of what I did when I was in the Army. I just often times did what I wanted to do." Beetle Bailey, originally called Spider, made his comic-strip debut as a smart aleck college student on Sept. 4, 1950, in 12 newspapers, according to King Features. It considered dropping the strip at the end of Walker's one-year contract, but when Beetle stumbled into an Army recruiting post in 1951 during the Korean War, the number of newspapers that picked up Beetle climbed.

Andrew Farago, curator of the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco, which is marking Beetle's anniversary with an exhibit, said Beetle, his pals and their uncomplicated gags have become familiar friends to readers over the years. "I think people find that really comforting," he said. Not everyone. Some women have been angry about the caricature of a dumb blond secretary, the curvaceous Miss Buxley, Walker said.
"The women's right groups got so riled up against me they had a national agenda of attacking me," Walker said. Burford said as an editor he wants artists "to work creatively and make people laugh and smile," but had to restrain Walker at times.
"Sometimes you have to pull back on this leash," he said. "As the rights of women increased, he became more sensitive to it." Still, as the newspaper industry retrenches, editors have not axed Beetle, Burford said. "Newspapers don't want to cut features that readers love," he said. Joe Schiesl, 72, a retired National Weather Service meteorologist in Manassas, Va., said he has been reading Beetle Bailey since he was in the ROTC and Air Force in the 1950s. "The characters, you have those in any organization," he said. "You have deadbeats like Beetle, and then you have people on their case like the sergeant." "I like it because it's funny. It perks you up every day," Schiesl said. Walker, born in El Dorado, Kan., earned $1 for his first cartoon at age 11 during the Depression. It was a big raise from the 10 cents an hour he was paid delivering to a local drug store, leading him to see cartooning as "where the real money is."

He now works out of his spacious Connecticut home in a study stuffed with golf trophies, cartoon awards, figurines of Beetle and his Army pals, numerous photos of celebrities on the wall, Beetle refrigerator magnets and a clock with Beetle and other characters from the strip. Walker, his two sons and Jerry Dumas, a colleague of 55 years, meet for an hour once a month to brainstorm gags for the comic strip. "Then we go to lunch and play golf," he said. Each of the four men proposes 30 gags, which are winnowed down until there are just enough strips to be used in a month. Walker rewrites them to try to improve the gags, he said. Dumas, a veteran cartoonist who draws the strip Sam and Silo and drew for The New Yorker, said the "gag conference" has always been enjoyable. "You sit down with a sheet of paper and pen. You just doodle," he said. "You come up with a picture you haven't come up with before. That's the hard part." Producing a cartoon every day for 60 years isn't easy, but Walker knows how to entertain Beetle's millions of fans. "I found that what they want is a laugh every day," he said. "They want funny pictures."

Beetle was originally a college student named Spider at Rockview University. The characters in that early strip were modeled after Walker's fraternity brothers at the University of Missouri. During the strip's first year, Beetle quit school and enlisted in the U.S. Army on 13 March 1951, where he has remained ever since.

Most of the humor in Beetle Bailey revolves around the inept characters stationed at Camp Swampy, (inspired by Camp Crowder, where Walker had once been stationed while in the Army). Private Bailey is a lazy sort who usually naps and avoids work, and thus is often the subject of verbal and physical chastising from his supervisor, Sergeant Snorkel. The characters never seem to see combat themselves, with the exception of mock battles and combat drills. In fact, they seem to be in their own version of stereotypical comic strip purgatory (initially basic training, they now appear to be stuck in time in a regular infantry division). The uniforms of Beetle Bailey are still the uniforms of the 1950s to early 1970s Army, with green fatigues and baseball caps as the basic uniform, and the open jeep as the basic military vehicle. Sergeant First Class Snorkel wears a green Class A Army dress uniform with heavily wrinkled garrison cap; the officers wear M1 helmet liners painted with their insignia. While Beetle Bailey's unit is Company A, one running gag is that the characters are variously seen in different branches of the Army, such as artillery, armor, infantry, and paratroops.

Beetle is always seen with a hat or helmet covering his forehead and eyes. Even on leave, his "civvies" include a pork pie hat worn in the same style. He can only be seen without it once—in the original strip when he was still a college student. The strip was pulled, and never ran in any newspaper. It has only been printed in various books on the strip's history. One daily strip had Sarge scare Beetle's hat off, but Beetle was wearing sunglasses.

One running gag has Sergeant Snorkel hanging helplessly to a small tree branch after having fallen off a cliff. While he is never shown falling off, or even walking close to the edge of a cliff, he always seems to hold on to that same branch, yelling for help.

Cast of characters
Beetle Bailey is unusual in having one of the largest and most varied permanent casts of any comic strip. While many of the older characters are rarely seen, almost none have been completely retired.

Private Beetle Bailey — the main character and strip's namesake; a feckless, shirking, perpetual goof-off and straggler known for his chronic laziness and generally insubordinate attitude. Slack, hapless, lanky and freckled, Beetle's eyes are always concealed, whether by headgear or, in the rare instance of not wearing any,[when?] by his hair.
Sergeant 1st Class Orville P. Snorkel — Beetle's nemesis; introduced in 1951. Sarge is known to frequently beat up Beetle for any excuse he can think of—leaving Beetle a shapeless pulp, (one of the most iconic images in the strip.) Sarge is too lovable to be a villain, however. Obese, snaggle-toothed and volatile, Sarge can be alternately short-tempered and sentimental. He and Beetle seem to have a mutual love/hate relationship; much of the time there's an implied truce between them. They share an uneasy alliance that sometimes borders on genuine (albeit unequal) friendship. In a recent strip,[when?] it's revealed that he is related to Beetle. He's from Pork Corners, KS.
Private "Killer" Diller — the notorious ladies' man, and Beetle's frequent crony—introduced in 1951.
Otto — Sgt. Snorkel's anthropomorphic, look-alike bulldog whom Sarge dresses up the same as himself, in an army uniform. Otto is fiercely protective of Sarge, and seems to have a particular antipathy towards Beetle. Originally he was a regular dog who walked on all fours, but Mort Walker finally decided to make him more human-like. As Walker put it, "I guess he's funnier that way." As the Sarge is often found hanging on a branch protruding from a cliff face, so once was Otto.
Cookie — the mess sergeant, who smokes cigarettes while preparing the mess hall's questionable menu. Except for the presence of cauliflower ears, a prominent heart tattoo, hairy shoulders and perpetual beard stubble, bears a striking resemblance to SFC Snorkel—and has also been known to occasionally beat up on Beetle. Like Sarge, he also loves food.
Brigadier General Amos T. Halftrack — the inept, frustrated, semi-alcoholic commander of Camp Swampy; introduced in 1951. Loves to golf, much to his wife Martha's dismay. Occasionally engages in crypto-harassment of his secretary, Miss Buxley. He's 78 years old, from Kenner, Louisiana.
Miss (Sheila) Buxley — Halftrack's beautiful, blonde, buxom civilian secretary—and occasional soldier's date (as well as a constant distraction for Halftrack). She used to live in Amarillo, Texas.[3] She appears in every Wednesday strip, with the exception of November 4, 2009; why on Wednesdays is unknown. (However, a possible prototype for Miss Buxley, a very similar-looking "new stenographer" for General Halftrack, appeared on January 22, 1970—a Thursday.) Miss Buxley has an apparent interest in Beetle, and is constantly pursued by Killer.
Private Blips — Halftrack's competent, jaded, not-at-all-buxom secretary ("blips" are small points of light on a radar screen). Resents Halftrack's constant ogling of Miss Buxley.
Lieutenant Sonny Fuzz — very young (with noticeably pointy eyebrows and very little facial hair), overly earnest, anal-retentive and "by the book", and highly susceptible to squeaky furniture. The apple-polishing Fuzz is always trying to impress uninterested superiors (especially Halftrack), and "rub it in the noses" of his subordinates. He was introduced in 1956. Mort Walker said he modeled the character and personality of Lt. Fuzz on himself, having taken himself too seriously after completing Officer Training.[4]
Lieutenant Jackson Flap — the strip's first black character, often touchy and suspicious—but effortlessly cool, introduced in 1970. Originally wore an afro hairstyle.
Private Zero — the buck-toothed, naïve farm boy who takes commands literally, and misunderstands practically everything.
Private Plato — the Camp's resident intellectual (as Tom Lehrer might say, "brings a book to every meal"); bespectacled, given to scrawling long-winded, analytical, often philosophical graffiti. Named after Plato but reportedly based on Walker's pal, fellow cartoonist Dik Browne. Plato is the only character other than Beetle to evolve from the early "college" years of the strip.[4]
Chaplain Staneglass — "He's praying... he's looking at the food... he's praying again!" According to Mort Walker's Private Scrapbook, Walker based the chaplain on Irish actor Barry Fitzgerald's priest character, from Going My Way (1944).

Supporting characters
Martha Halftrack — the General's formidable, domineering wife. She's 70 yrs. old and is from Morganfield, KY. (She has been known to sneak dates without Amos knowing.)
Bunny (originally "Buzz") Piper — Beetle's seldom-seen girlfriend.
Private Rocky — Camp Swampy's long-haired, disgruntled social dissident; a former biker gang member and rebel-without-a-clue, introduced 1958.
Private Cosmo — Camp Swampy's sunglass-wearing, resident "shady entrepreneur" and huckster. Loosely based on William Holden's Sefton character from Stalag 17; almost forgotten in the 1980s.
Captain Sam Scabbard — hard-nosed, flat-top wearing officer, often as hard on Sarge as Sarge is on Beetle.
Major Greenbrass — straight man and golf partner to Gen. Halftrack.
Private Julius Plewer — fastidious fussbudget, who eventually became Halftrack's chauffeur.
Corporal Yo — the strip's first Asian character, introduced in 1990.
Dr. Bonkus — Camp Swampy's loopy staff psychiatrist, whose own sanity is questionable.
Specialist Chip Gizmo — Camp Swampy's resident computer geek, was named by a write-in contest in 2002. The contest sponsored by Dell Computer Corp., received more than 84,000 entries. It raised more than $100,000 for the Fisher House Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides housing for families of patients at military and veterans hospitals.[5]

Here is a statue that my nephew made for our Uncle Mort. It's made of pure brass. Can you imagine the talent it takes to make a statue like this? Great work Jeremy.

Marker Pipes

The pipe is used to mark where the channel is so when you're out in the ocean beyond the reef and you are on a SUP board or a kayak, you'll know the deepest waters to get back in front of the reef. It was recently sleeved by Gilbert R. from Waialua/Makaha/Faria Beach area

Weather. One of Hawaii's best assets is its mild and temperate climate. Tropical storms are rare. The highest official temperature ever recorded in Honolulu was 95 degrees; the lowest temperature was 53 degrees. August through October are the hottest months of the year. The average rainfall for Honolulu is 22.02 inches, with November through March the wettest months. Lightweight clothing is worn year-round, especialy if you are resident manager of a beach front condominium where nature requires you to wear shorts (slippers & shirts are optional) shoes are not allowed for any resident manager. Air Quality. With the almost constant gentle tradewind breezes air quality on Oahu is some of the best in the world.

Housing. Because of the higher land values and more outdoor living, the average family moving to Hawaii lives in a smaller house or apartment than they are accustomed to on the mainland.

Taxes. The state of Hawaii has a personal income tax that generally follows the national trend. Personal net income tax rates graduate from 2% to 10% on incomes in excess of $20,500. Transportation. Hawaii at this time (2000) has no rapid transit facilities. For those who do not own a vehicle, Oahu's bus system offers more than 70 routes and 4,000 bus stops. The fees are $1.00 for adults and $.50 for students. There are a number of Trolley companies operating service to the greater metropolitan area of Honolulu. Aloha and Hawaiian Airlines are the two scheduled air carriers providing service to the neighbor islands. As of the time of this writing, Aloha has gone out of business and Go Airlnes has taken its spot.

Communities. North Shore of Oahu is renowned for some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. A quick 35-45-minute drive from Honolulu International Airport takes you to the quaint historic town of Haleiwa, the center of the North Shore community. This is the playground for surfers, windsurfers, hikers, bikers, scuba divers and fishermen, oh and also a playground for theives. Lock your cars when to park somewhere ad also when you leave your car in a parking lot like at the beach for a day, leave your car windows half way open so it's obvious that the car is open and do not leave anything in your car.

The North Shore is not called the North Shore because it's on the North end of the island. It' called the North Shore because the surf breaks best on a North Swell. Kuilima (now called Turtle Bay Hilton) is true North.

Entertainment - Party

A local name for party rentals (tables & chairs) is North Shore Equipment rentals. His name is Lee Bryant and can be reached at 637-4600. He is located in Waialua by Otake Camp at 67-016 Farrington Hwy. In 2009 he was honored as The North Shore Kama'aina of the year and is listed among those acknowledged by the North Shore Chamber of commerce.

A party was held over the weekend that provided tables, chairs and delivery for them. Their name is Kama'aina Party Rentals & Supplies. His name is Louis Laurito and is home based in Ewa Beach. He can be reached at 271-3379 or his E-mail at laurito@hawaiiantel.net He also has tents and access to other party supplies. His party this weekend went off without a hitch both in delivery and pick up. The customer was very satisfied with Louis' services. I believe he said that he has some 400 chairs and 50 tables.

This party by some was considered a bit too large even though there were no party issues to report.

I think by those standards, this party might be considered a bit too small. So if you plan to have a party on the property, you may want to find something in between the two extremes. :o)

Rocks

All these rocks were found way up in the mountains at a privately known location by me back in 2008. I knew about these rocks nearly 40 years ago when I used to hike in the mountains but never had reason to share them. Now came to be the time. I hope you enjoy looking at them. They were brought here for your enjoyment.

This is what appears to be a birthing stone that I found up in the mountains many years ago but never brought it down because I had no place to put it. It was the only one of its kind in the area. It too is rather large being 4'long and 3'wide.

This is a rock I found over by chuns reef on the side of the road. It has been called a Gilrock. Nobody I've iterviewed is quite certain why. It is the largest of all the other rocks and may weigh well over 6,000 lbs.

This rock appears to have man made carvings on it as if someone tried to chissel it down into smaller rocks but gave up. These carvings do not appear to be made by nature but appear to be at attempt by somebody many years ago to make the rock smaller.

That's not a smaller rock on the bottom right, that's all part of the same rock that is carved. And those dark lines are carvings, they are not natural cracks.

Filming Locations
Everything but the interior scenes of the airplane in the pilot episode have been filmed on location in Hawaii, with the island variously standing in for Korea, New Mexico, England, and Sydney. Following are some of the Hawaiian landmarks that have factored into filming.

1. Mokule'ia Beach on Oahu's North Shore (off Highway 930), near Dillingham Airfield.

This beach, right next to a major highway, was strewn with the wreckage of the fictional Flight 815, as seen in the eyepopping pilot episode. The wreckage was so convincing, local authorities kept receiving reports of “a terrible plane crash” until they put up a sign that it was a film set.

The last episode to use this site was “Whatever the Case May Be,” during which the castaways moved to another part of the beach (actually Police Beach near Haleiwa) because (on the show) the tide was rising dangerously. In reality, the tide would be too high to film during the winter months, so a safer location was chosen.

2. Ka'a'awa Valley, Oahu

You’ll need the permission of the owners of the Kualoa Ranch to reach this location. You can rent horses and ride to the locations used in the series. You can also ride along on a tour bus for a movie set tour (which includes some locations for Lost) or ride through the valley on ATV's. You may even get to see some Lost cast members and crew at work!

In the pilot episode, Charlie, Jack, and Kate hike through this valley in search of the plane’s cockpit and the transceiver.

In the “Pilot, Part 2,” Sayid, Kate, Charlie, Shannon, Boone, and Sawyer camp out overnight here after hiking higher to try to send a signal on the transceiver.

In “Solitary,” Hurley builds his golf course here in “the first Island Open.”

3. Turtle Bay Resort

If you are not a guest at the resort, you’ll need to pay a fee to park.

In the pilot episode, Jack, Kate, and Charlie flee the monster after it attacks the cockpit, running through a wooded area near the resort.

The banyan tree from which Charlie is hung in the "All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues” episode is on the West Trail of the resort. It was also used as the site of the polar bear attack in “Special.”

The Lost Season One DVD party was also held at the resort.

4. Hawaii Convention Center, Honolulu (801 Kalakaua Avenue)

The center stands in for the Sydney Airport in several episodes, including “White Rabbit” and “House of the Rising Sun.”

5. St. Paul's Mission, Queen Emma Square, Honolulu

The mission is used as the English church where Charlie confesses his sins in “The Moth.”

6. Byodo-In Temple, Valley of the Temples

The temple here is used in “House of the Rising Sun” as Sun’s father’s house in Korea, with Jin proposing to Sun on the adjoining bridge.

7. Waimea Falls, 59-864 Kamehameha Highway

The picturesque waterfall where Kate and Sawyer have a flirtatious swim and find the metal case in “Whatever the Case May Be," is located at the Waimea Valley Audubon Center, formerly known as Waimea Falls Park.

8. First Hawaiian Bank, 2 North King Street, Honolulu

The Chinatown branch of this bank is the site of Kate’s bank robbery (“Whatever the Case May Be”), supposedly set in New Mexico.

9. Famous Kahuku Sweet Shrimp Truck, North Shore, Oahu

The shrimp truck owned by the ill-fated Frank Duckett, whom Sawyer guns down, thinking he is the real Sawyer in “Outlaws,” is legit; it’s been in business for 10 years. Open daily from 9:30 am to 7 pm.

10. Laniakea YWCA, 1040 Richards Street, Honolulu

While Kate is running from the police she has her hair blond she then goes to a inn to wash out the dye to get to the hotel room she swiping a key from a cleening cart the outside of the inn this is a inn in La'ie on the North Shore of Oahu the inn is across from the McDonalds and down the street from the Polynesian Cultural Center however the shower she is in is not one located in the hotel.

Tourist attractions and beaches

North Shore

1. Banzai pipeline (Ehukai beach)
This is one of the most famous surfing beaches in the world. They do have parking.

2. Waimea Bay
This beach is easy to find. There is a huge jumping rock here. This beach is in Lost the tv show and featured in many movies. There is parking here.

3. Laniakea Beach
No one really swims here it's mostly for sea turtle (honu) watching. Sightings are pretty much guaranteed! No parking here so park across the street.

4. Sharks Cove
Great place to snorkel

South Side of Island

1. Flea market
It's only 3 days a week Wed. Th. & Fri. You will find great deals on local made products. You can bargain here!

2. Pearl harbor
It's a must and very touching experience. Go early in the day

3. International Market place
Famous for all the bargain shopping. Never pay the 1st price they offer. They can be very aggressive.

4. Pali lookout
It's pretty and everyone goes. Nothing special to me.

5. Diamond head
Nice quick hike. Beautiful lookout on top!

6. Hanauma Bay
The most popular place to snorkel. Very safe. Guaranteed tropical fish sightings! Over populated but it's my fav snorkeling spot!

Windward side (east coast of the island)

1. East coast drive on the day all the way to the north shore. Drive along the coast all the way from the Waikiki to North shore( the most beautiful drive u will EVER experience!) starting in Waikiki gives u the better view of the ocean. Don't start on the north shore. Otherwise ur back will be facing the ocean.

2. Lanikai Beach
If u only go to 1 beach I suggest this is the one. It's the most photographed beach in all of Hawaii! This is my favorite. Street parking it's in a neighborhood. Get a map for this one!
3. Kailua beach
Also beautiful and is right next door to lanikai beach but more crowded and not as pretty! Parking here.

4. Makapuu lighthouse trail
This lighthouse is featured in 50 first dates. Which I def recommend u watch before u go! When u are hiking there are several lookout points when u get to the sign with all the whales on it look over the side. Down below u will see 2 natural water pools u can hike down to. Make sure u have plenty time to get up and down. It's an amazing experience swimming in a nature formed pool and having fresh ocean water flow in constantly.

This Saturday from 8 am to noon, the FIN Oahu group will be conducting a Reef Watch fish survey at 3 tables beach. This is a great opportunity for members of Malama Pupukea to participate in a different kind of fish count so if any volunteers would like to help out. Please email Terri msfuzz@hawaii.rr.com and then come to 3 tables by 8 am. FIN Oahu is willing to share the data that is collected with respect to the fish that we count for our surveys, so this activity is more than just another fun day at the beach.

Jalee wins Miss Hawaii and likes what she hears

Miss Hawaii 2010 has a number of contests under her belt that she's won. Last year 2009, Jalee Kate Fuselier daughter of our own Haleiwa Surf was runner up to Miss Hawaii. most photogenic and the Children's Miracle Network Award. This year June 12, 2010 she won MISS HAWAII, Miss Photogenic, and a Community Service and Children's Miracle Network award. Despite the fact that she will be spending much of this year traveling representing Hawaii and the pageant, she will be spending all her time thinking of us here at her home, The Haleiwa Surf.

KHON TV2 reorts: A new Miss Hawaii was crowned Saturday night at the Hawaii Convention Center. Miss North Shore, Jalee Fuselier took the crown. She was raised in Haleiwa and graduated from Hawaii Pacific University with a bachelors degree in international relations. She beat out 21 other contestants to win the title. Fuselier will represent Hawaii at the Miss America competition in January.

EXAMINER.COM reports: Hawaii has a new representative to the Miss America pageant. Jalee Fuselier was crowned Miss America 2010 at ceremonies Saturday in the Hawaii Convention Center, the Miss Hawaii Organization reports. According to her official profile, Jalee resides in Haleiwa. She earned a degree in international relations at Hawaii Pacific University. The founder of Ready for the Real World, she plans to earn a master’s degree in international relations. Jalee will represent Hawaii at the Miss America pageant, tentatively scheduled for January 2011. The final competition and crowning will be broadcast live on the ABC television network.

North Shore News: It was a night that lit up the hearts of Hale'iwa households and the entire North Shore on Saturday June 12, 2010. when our own Jalee Kate Fuselier was crowned MissHawaii 2010. The annual gala event took place at the Hawaii Convention Center and televised live on channel OC16 and around the world streaming live on OC16tv.com.

The Miss Hawaii pageant competition was chiseled down to twenty-two island beauties for the pageant finals that evening. When it was all over, the judges scored Jalee Fuselier the reigning Miss North Shore, the overall winner and to the delight of fans and family in attendance, she was then crowned the new MissHawaii 2010 by last year's Miss Hawaii 2009 Raeceen Anuenue Woolford. Bob Berryhill - one of our own

It's one of the most recognizable tunes to come out of the 1960s, and after nearly 50 years it is still played by people across the world.

Friday we sat down with the man behind the famous song, "Wipe Out." For the accurate full story on Bob and his group, see http://www.thesurfaris.com/

Bob Berryhill and the Surfaris knew there was something special about this song.

"Wipe Out was written in about 10 minutes," said Berryhill.

But they never imagined it would be one of the most popular tunes of their generation.

"The bass player kind of had a feel for this and through that into the lead," he said.

Berryhill says the song was written because the group needed a second tune for their 45. Wipe Out sent the Surfaris from the California surf scene to international fame.

"And by the third time he says okay boys, that's good, we got it, and that was all there was to it. It was just a spontaneous creation of three 15 years old and our drummer, he was an old guy, he was 17."

That was in January 1963. By April it was number one in Los Angeles and by July, Wipe Out shot to number one across the world.

"And it was number one in Germany for that year, number one in Australia, number one in Japan so it went all over the world just lightning, so by the time we were 16 years old we had a number one record all over the world."

Today it is one the most popular songs played on the ukulele. This is Hawaii's own Jake and Bruce Shimabukuro shredding it at a local bar.

"It's been on 746 albums documented on BMI."

The 63-year-old Berryhill says the song allowed he and his high school buddies to travel the world touring with such acts the Beach Boys and Roy Orbison. Billboard recently came out with the 30 most popular summer songs of all time. Wipe Out was number two behind Summer in the City, by Lovin Spoonful.

"It's one of those situations where you learn to enjoy the greatness of something at 15 years old. I tell other guys who are learning to play guitar be careful what you create when you're a young kid, it might stick with you."

And to think it started when a bunch of southern California surfers decided to make a fun song a song that is still loved decades later.

The Surfaris were an American surf rock band formed in Glendora, California in 1962. They are best known for two songs that hit the charts in the Los Angeles, California area, and nationally by May 1963: "Surfer Joe" on the A side and "Wipe Out" on the B side of a 45 RPM single.

The original band members were Ron Wilson (drums), Jim Fuller (lead guitar), Bob Berryhill (rhythm guitar) and Pat Connolly (bass). Saxophone player Jim Pash joined after their "Wipe Out" / "Surfer Joe" recording sessions at Pal Studios. Ken Forssi, later of Love, played bass with The Surfaris, as well as Jack Oldham, who performed with the group from 1966-1967, including a performance at the 1967 Grammy Awards.

Wilson's energetic drum solo made "Wipe Out" one of the best-remembered instrumental songs of the period. "Wipe Out" is also remembered particularly for its introduction before the music starts, a cracking sound (imitating a breaking surf board), and a maniacal laugh followed by the only two words of the song, "wipe out". "Wipe Out" was written in the studio by the four original members (Berryhill, Connolly, Fuller, Wilson), and was originally going to be titled "Switchblade". It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.[1]

The band released a series of records, with two other singles, "Surfer Joe" and "Point Panic", having an impact on the charts. Point Panic is a renowned surfing venue in Hawaii named after the song.

The Surfaris disbanded in 1966 but have periodically reunited and are still active as of 2008[update], performing and recording, often re-recording their old and new songs. They still perform as Bob Berryhill's Surfaris and Jim Fuller's Surfaris (two separate groups) all over United States and Europe with a large fan base.

Following the death of television personality Morton Downey, Jr., news reports and obituaries incorrectly credited him as the composer of "Wipe Out" (as well as The Chantays' "Pipeline").[2] As of 2010[update], Downey's official website continues to make this claim.[3]

Drummer Ron Wilson died on 7 May 1989, one month short of his 44th birthday. Wilson had released an album of his songs, entitled Lost It In The Surf, on Bennet House Records of Grass Valley, California, which was recorded in June 1987. A very small number of cassettes of this album were produced. Lost It In The Surf included a cover of "Louie Louie", complete with Scottish bagpipes.

June 21, 2010 is the longest day of the year and the first day of summer . . . well here in Hawaii anyways. :o)

October 6, 2010 the sun went back around Kaena Point so the sunset over the ocean cannot be seen from the property.

October 16, 2010 the lights turn on at 6:20pm and turn off at 6:20am

Exhaust Fan

chances are if you have not changed out your exhaust fan as of yet, this is what it probably looks like. If you turn on your fan and it is working, hold a piece of toilet paper up to the face of the fan. (don't let it go, your testing to see if the fan is working and if the vent lid is open or closed) If it tries to suck it in, your fan is working properly. If it blows it back into the room, your vent lid is stuck. Simply remove the cover plate, remove the fan itself and unstuck the vent lid. It is probably rusted shut which will need to be lubricated. Open it and close it a number of times to be sure that it is working and not squeeking. Clean your fan thoroughly by blowing all the lint from the fan blades, Re-plug it in, snap it in and put your vent plate back. Your fan should now be working properly.

Home Depot sells a replacement fan for your bathroom made by Nu Tone. It is Model #QTXEN110 or you can purchase it on line using Internet #202018193. This model also comes with a light, but this model number has no light. You can click the picture to get zoom in and a closer look at the wording.

You will have to cut your drywall slightly, but if you do it right, you won't have much painting and repair work to deal with. The wiring hooks right up. There was a 3 speed variable wall switch that they have, but this was all I was able to find. Hunter 3 Speed Dial Fan Control Model # 27180 - Internet # 100395274. This switch costs about $25. They have a similar switch that works at Home Depot for about $5.

Or you can do what I did . . . I had my existing fan rebuilt, replaced the motor and here in the invoice and the company I chose to do the rebuilding of the fan.

The Company was Herbias Electric at 1320 Kalani St. Unit 212 off of Waiakamilo Rd. in Kalihi, phone 845-4877. He is licensed C-13730. I recommend his work.

Condo Pets - always being updated

This is a picture donated by Res. Mgr's wife Marsha W. It is a picture taken of the Mark Glaser boat Grand Slam on 4-9-11 around 3pm as it was returning from a fishing charter and was passing in front of the Haleiwa Surf Condos. This was the last day for this 2011 season to see whales in front of our condos.

...The Whale... If you read a recent front page story of the San Francisco Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso and a line tugging in her mouth.
A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.
When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around as she was thanking them.
Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.
May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you. And, may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.

This year, it was on July 6, 2009 that they came. Unfortunately, I could not catch them jumping out of the water, but they were going off like they did last year. They came on this one day and then they were gone. I am beginning to draw the conclusion that this is in fact a yearly visit. You can still click onto the picture, then scroll down a bit and get a close up verifying that it is the dolphins you're looking at.

These pictures were taken on July 16, 2008. At the time, it seemed like no big deal that the dolphins showed up on that date and jumped around for your viewing pleasure, but then they left and we didn't see them again. Then this year, again in July 2009 they were in the same spot jumping around just like they did before. And it was about the same time of the day, in the late afternoon for about 3 hours (between 3pm - 6pm). I'm wondering if there is some type of cycle that they have where they make a yearly appearance for some sort of annual excursion for our benefit. And all this is done at no additional charge for you, the tenent-tourist guest.

See the post in the foreground? That's right outside the channel. There were about 4 dozen dolphins jumping around out there. And there were similar amounts this year. They only stayed a few hours and only on one day. This year they showed up on July 6, 2009. I'll monitor when they come next to confirm a cycle.

This is the Dreaded Hawaiian Snake. It is the only snake that is legally on the islands. It gets up to about 3" in length. Total weight is about 1 gram.

These pictures of the Condo were from the early 70's and were donated from a long time resident Mrs. Bobby Wonder. We weren't able to separate them into single lots because they were auto-stuck in here photo album for nearly 4 decades. But you can still zoom in on them. Mrs. Wonder has lived on this property for over 60 years now, since WWII. Can you imagine what Haleiwa looked like then?

Learning Da Kine: A Filmmaker Tackles Local Culture and Pidgin by Marlene Booth

When Professor Kanalu Young and I first met, we were serving together as panelists for a media competition, judging among several grant proposals as to which would make the best films about the experiences of Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. Though the two of us come from very different backgrounds - I was born and raised Jewish in Des Moines, Iowa and lived for over thirty years on the East Coast of the United States; Kanalu grew up Hawaiian/ Chinese/Caucasianin Hawaii, where he has lived all his life- we found that we had complementary responses to the proposals we read. After serving on the panel, we discussed the possibility of Kanalu - a tenured professor of Hawaiian Studies with a PhD in history - and me - a documentary filmmaker of films about American culture and history - creating together a film about Hawaii. We did not know what its focus would be, but we knew that examination of culture in Hawaii would be a part of it.

Though we proposed and rejected various ideas, we eventually began discussing language. Our early research led us to examine Hawaiian language and its rebirth. In fact, though I had returned to living in Boston after a year’s sabbatical in Hawaii, I returned to Hawaii to spend a few weeks immersing myself in the subject.

On my final day in town, I met with Kanalu to discuss my research. After he listened to me patiently, occasionally interjecting comments and critiques, he sat back in his chair, took a breath, and said, “You know I think we should consider Pidgin. Hawaiian language is very interesting, but really, without Pidgin, I would cease to be whole.”

Kanalu speaks the King’s English and is also fluent in Hawaiian. I had heard him speak Pidgin perhaps once or twice, and I had no idea he felt that Pidgin was central to his identity. I am not certain that he, himself, had verbalized this thought before. But once the words were out of his mouth, he felt, and I experienced, that there was something powerful in his statement. Inspired by that single sentence alone, I flew back to Boston, determined to find a film about this subject that I’d barely noticed before.

I left Boston to live in Hawaii in the fall of 2003. Kanalu and I received production funding from Pacific Islanders in Communications and began in earnest the research and discussion for our film about Pidgin and local culture. Through the halls of the university, in working-class neighborhoods of Honolulu, and at beaches, parks, weddings, and funerals, we have found Pidgin everywhere. We find that it unites - the simplest raise of the eyebrows becomes a way to assert identity and establish camaraderie - and also divides - rapid-fire Pidgin spoken under the breath can be a sure way to exclude others. It also measures authenticity - “da bugga ok” - and angers educators, and it makes some people Learning Da Kine laugh and cry while others are repelled by it. Through it all, Pidgin and the local culture that springs from it define something unique about Hawaii. It is that uniqueness - the intangible spirit, the combination of tough core and gentle soul - that largely makes Hawaii Hawaii and that guarantees that the islands will never become just another state in the United States.

Through Pidgin, we are chronicling the essence of local life in our film.
Why make a film about Pidgin’? That is a question asked by my friend Marv, a transplant from New Jersey, who has been living on Oahu for at least fifteen years. To paraphrase Marv, Pidgin is “not a real language. It’s broken English. The people who use it sound stupid and uneducated. It’ll get them nowhere. Plain and simple. Nothing to discuss. How can you do a film about it! There’s nothing there.”

In one way or another, the question: “Why make a film about Pidgin?” has been the guiding force for Kanalu and me from the beginning. For me as the outsider, the question was how to understand what was in front of me. In Hawaii, I often felt as if I had left the United States and landed in a foreign country, albeit a country where English was the mother tongue - more or less. As a Midwesterner, I felt at home with Hawaii’s sense of time, with a culture founded on people-to people contact, and with a way of living that valued listening above orating. And yet, I found Hawaii novel and, in many ways, puzzling. In other places I have lived - Boston, for example - I’ve been able to latch onto something familiar and to use that as my base for understanding. In Hawaii, I did not know where to begin. I sat in on courses at the university and thought about studying a Language - as I’d done when I lived in Israel - as a way to begin to unlock local culture. But with only James Michener’s Hawaii and Liliuokalani’s Hawaii’s Story by Hawaii’s Queen as background, I didn’t know which language would open Hawaii to me. Hawaiian? Chinese? Japanese? (I hadn’t begun to consider Tagalog, and in my early days here, I’d never even heard of Ilocano.) Who were the people I saw in front of me? What were their backgrounds? What were their stories?

The professor in one of my classes was Chinese, a friend in my art class was Filipina, and my law school hula halau contained a mix - Hawaiian, Portuguese, Chomorran, Korean. In my halau, I was classed, accurately, as a “special needs” hula dancer and assigned a more experienced dancer as a tutor. Sherry, my wonderful and very patient tutor who took time out of a busy schedule as a first year law student to work with me, was from Saipan, a place so unfamiliar to me that I heard it as “Japan” when she first told me. In being able to distinguish among people of Asian or Pacific Island ancestry, I was a babe in the woods. Everyone, it seemed to me, had shared stories and frames of reference that were Learning Da Kine completely new to me. Hawaii seemed a cultural maze, and I had little clue about how to sort it out. Where did one begin with such a dazzling array of people, languages, cultures, and food?

As a young college student, I had traveled from the Midwest to visit my then - boyfriend (now husband of thirty-eight years) in New York City. I well remember being eighteen years old, walking hand-in-hand down New York’s streets, looking up at the huge skyscrapers and down at the mix of hurried, make-no-eye-contact people, and being astonished. I could only look and listen and respond to the surface of things. I had no idea how I could ever begin to penetrate such a city, overwhelming to me on a grand scale.

My response to Hawaii mimicked my New York experience. Hawaii did not intimidate in the same way physically - the sizes, shapes, and colors of plants were dazzling and inviting - but the social landscape was just as powerfully jaw dropping as the buildings of New York. There seemed to be no one key to unlock Hawaii, as the French I learned in college, for example, worked somewhat to unlock France’s people and culture. Not knowing where to begin, I grabbed what came my way. I joined the halau at the law school. I took part in an informal, drop-in Hawaiian language class at Barnes and Noble, where grammar and sentence structure continued to elude me, but legends, place names, and ways of knowing the world embedded in Hawaiian began to make sense. I gravitated to events that began to fill in the picture such as performances by the group Olomana, the Talkstory Conference, reenactments of the Queen’s life by Nalani Olds, staged before a grateful and strongly moved audience at the Waikiki Public Library, non-stop watching of the Merrie Monarch Festival, ethnic festivals at Kapiolani Park, and anything else that caught my eye. Cultural immersion often ordered my day.

The tilt of Hawaii English, which my then ninth grade daughter began to acquire and the kindnesses of strangers, to adapt a line from Tennessee Williams, who would offer me fifty cents for parking rather than exchange my dollar for their four quarters. They were new experiences to me - new ways of interacting with people. In Boston (and even more so in New York, which I frequently visited and learned not to fear overly), you learn not to make conversation with strangers. In Hawaii, strangers waited for me to change lanes! The fact that in conversations people would ask where I was from and, occasionally, my ethnicity, but never inquired about my line of work or the name of my college, astounded me. I’d just lived through the process of my son’s applying to college from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Every conversation I’d had for a year with parents of his peers seemed to be filled with references to elite colleges as a not-so-coded way of gauging our children’s grades and SAT scores. In my encounters in Hawaii’s “local-culture” open classroom, however, that topic hardly seemed to matter. Reading the morning paper also gave me a window into Hawaii. Within my first week here, I’d acquired the words “yohana,” “keiki,” “kupuna,” “pono,” “kuleana.” I Learning Da Kine used a Hawaiian language dictionary to read the paper. But just by reading the used a Hawaiian language dictionary to read the paper. But just by reading the usual fare of daily life, a whole new world-of Hawaiian culture, the primacy of family life, and the importance of being humble and living with sensitivity - replaced the world I’d known of status, credentials, public recognition, and being self-made. New ideas and ways of thinking, such as Hawaiian culture and Buddhism, did not fit with anything I was accustomed to, and they began to offer new, alternative ways of understanding.

I remember once in Boston helping a Japanese journalist friend write a grant application in English. She and I would discuss ideas for her proposal, which she would jot down in English to translate later into Japanese, and later still to translate back into English. I asked her why she didn’t just write in Japanese in the first place to make the process speedier. She replied that our conversations represented an American way of thinking. To write a proposal that reflected her ideas, she needed to translate her thoughts into a Japanese way of thinking. She
needed my help not to understand the language but to understand the thinking behind the language. I don’t remember when I first heard Pidgin or became aware of it. It seeped in without my being aware of it - a bit like bird song in Hawaii, or the sound of ukuleles - and soon it seemed to be everywhere.

Like my own family’s home language of Yiddish, Pidgin is a fusion language, made up of words and phrases that invoke a shared past. When people speak Pidgin, the language brings them home.

But Pidgin is not spoken in every home, and the message about Pidgin that speakers hear and internalize is that Pidgin is bad English. “Don‘t speak bad English,” many of my friends remember being told. My friend, Kent Sakoda, coauthor of a book called Pidgin Grammar, teaches a course at the University of Hawaii called, “Pidgin and Creole English in Hawaii.” He asks his students to interview a university friend who speaks Pidgin. We hear their stories and learn of their profound fondness for Pidgin, of their sense that Pidgin connects multiple generations and works as a language of the heart. But when we ask if we can film them talking story in Pidgin, the answer is no. “Shame, brah.” It’s one thing to speak Pidgin with friends or even with researchers. It is something else to commit yourself to a conversation in Pidgin captured for all time on film. “Shame, brah.”

So how do you make a film about Pidgin if no one will appear on screen speaking the language? Furthermore, how do you frame the debate about Pidgin if critics of the language - those people who refuse to even call it a language - also refuse to appear on screen? What we have discovered in the making of our film is that, if we want the chance to capture spoken Pidgin, we can say that we are making a film about local culture. Then, sometimes, people relax and let us film. Learning Da Kine interestingly because nearly every school child in Hawai’i is taught to use his and
her best English in public, even people proud of speaking Pidgin will switch to English as soon as they see a camera and microphone. Those scenes we have been able to capture in Pidgin have come about either because someone is so engaged in an activity that he or she doesn’t notice being filmed or people are so certain that they speak English properly that they don’t mind “kicking back and busting out the Pidgin.”

Kanalu arranged the first scene we filmed, a reunion of friends from his Paki Park neighborhood. Though he had run into some of these friends from time to time, he had not seen others since childhood. He wanted to reassemble his fiftysomething buddies in the place where they had become a cohesive group.

But there was a second, more urgent reason for assembling this group and filming this scene. At age fifteen (more than thirty-five years ago), while swimming with some of these friends at Cromwell’s Beach, Kanalu had a diving accident that left him quadriplegic. His friends, then merely fourteen or fifteen years of age, initially mistook his failure to emerge from the water as the game ma-ke (Hawaiian for “dead”) man. Not knowing what to do, they had acted on instinct and out of great fear. Miraculously, they saved his life.

Kanalu felt that he had never adequately thanked those friends. His accident, and the anger and pain that followed, separated him from his friends and their shared past. The Paki Park boys were just beginning to play basketball. Kanalu, confined to a wheelchair, could not bear to watch his pals doing what he longed to do. They, in turn, no longer knew how to talk to him. So he stayed away, finished high school, graduated from college, and eventually earned a PhD in history. His life took a direction far away from Paki Park. He got a job teaching Hawaiian Studies at the university. Now in his fifties, Kanalu waited to thank those friends from his past. As he saw it, the best way to do that was to take them back to Paki Park and to speak Pidgin.

Though the scene unfolded more slowly than we had both imagined - turning back the clock more than thirty-five years takes time - Kanalu learned things he had not known. He learned how painful it was for his friends to revisit his accident when, just fifteen years old themselves, they barely had the wherewithal to understand what was happening and to know what to do. Speaking Pidgin gave Kanalu and his friends the context they needed to carry out a long-overdue conversation.

One of the people who played a key role in Kanalu’s rehabilitation the first year after his accident was his Kamehameha School classmate, Debbie. As part of her community service work in high school, Debbie volunteered as a “candy striper” at the rehabilitation facility where Kanalu resided for a year after being Learning Da Kine discharged from the acute care hospital. Debbie and Kanalu had stayed in touch through the years, and once, when both Debbie and I were visiting Kanalu, she told us the story of her mother’s dogged push to learn to speak Standard English. We interviewed Debbie’s mother, Teresa, and learned how, while a scholarship student at Mid-Pacific Institute, she had worked with a speech professor from the University of Hawaii to change the way she spoke. In the interview, Teresa told us “You see, I could not distinguish the “i,” so for ship, I would say, “sheep,” and for the “th’s,” I would say “de.” All my sounds were wrong.” Teresa spent hours on the hill above Mid-Pacific Institute chanting exercises with strings of “th” words to learn to pronounce Standard English. “It grew on me the longer I remained in school that I needed to improve - but you cannot transform a person’s language overnight.”

Teresa succeeded, winning speech contests, gaining entrance to and graduating from the University of Hawaii, and becoming a teacher. As a teacher, she vividly recalled the frustration of having her speech corrected when she could not hear the difference between the sounds of Hawaii Creole and Standard English. When her students spoke Pidgin - as many of them did over many years - she chose never to correct them outright but instead to model Standard English.

Sue McCabe, a native Pidgin speaker from the Big Island who learned to speak Standard English while living and working in Oregon, took a different approach when she worked as a professor in the speech department at the University of Hawaii. The university required that every undergraduate pass an oral English test in order to graduate. Speech 101, 102, and 103, three semester-long classes, were designed to “de-Pidginize” (my word) the speech of Hawaii’s university students.

But Sue ran into a problem teaching her students. They would tell her that they did not want to sound like haoles. “Succeeding” by taking on the speech and mannerisms of Caucasians became too high a price to pay for many students. “Talking like a haole” implied turning your back on family, friends, ethnic group, and neighborhood, moving away from group identity and becoming instead a self-defined individual. As Kanalu says of Hawaii, “If the United States is defined by rugged individualism, Hawaii is the land of rugged group-ism.”

Pidgin and the behaviors that accompany it - hanging back, enjoying people, not feeling rushed - pull and keep local people together. A willingness to speak Pidgin, even if fluent in English, acknowledges a willingness to belong in Hawaii, an acceptance of the people and customs that make Hawaii unique. To stand apart from Pidgin - to condemn it for its sound, its pace, and the “attitude” it engenders - suggests a wish to erase Hawaii’s multi-ethnic past and to encourage Hawaii to develop as quickly as possible like any other American state. Stories told in Pidgin become post-plantation tales of belonging.

Far from a sign of shame, Pidgin speakers and non-Pidgin speakers alike should revel in the accessibility of a history whose accents, rhythms, and turns-of-phrase still excite us. The product of a multitude of cultures that prize ancestry and honor older generations, Pidgin keeps alive the spirit of an earlier era Hawaii, one before the time of freeways and cell phones. At its best, Pidgin reminds local people of who they were and warns them against what they might become. At its worst, it can become an excuse for resisting skills that might make a difference for the individual and the group alike. If Kanalu would cease to be whole without Pidgin, it is in large part because the language retains the touch and taste of all who have come before and made him who he is. Not bad, brah, e?

Simple, easy to install and looks good. The aluminum towel rack space saver behind the toilet is from Walmart.

This is the low flush brand of toilet I found that works fantastic and is well within your budget. Brand name is "American Standard". It is sold at Home Depot or Lowes for a little less than $200.

The toilet paper may cost extra.

Electrical layout 1BR as originally installed

One thing to consider is that these electrical panels are 40 years old and had breakers that were made by GE. Only the GE breaker will fit into this panel. All units should consider putting a split 20amp breaker to upgrade and reduce or better distribute the load currently wired in your existing panel. If you click onto the picture, you can get a better close up of what you're looking at and why I decided to better distribute the electrical load. Look closely to how on the top breaker there are two wires going to through this circuit.

For the single bedroom, the electrical layout for the Breaker schedule is:

This is a picture of the electrical panel after the split 20amp breaker has been installed. You see now how there is only one wire going to each breaker switch? Here it has been decided that it is better to split the power load from a single 20amp breaker to split the load to two breakers. Initially the power load for this one 20amp breaker powered the living room plugs and switches, kitchen light, master bath light and switch and master bedroom plug on the North wall.

All breakers are 20amp. I have now installed a double twenty amp breaker to lighten the load of the existing #1 single 20amp breaker which in my opinion was way overloaded. This is the schedule after the #1 20amp breaker has been switched to a double 20amp switch.

If you were to gut the entire Unit and start with a new floor plan, the entire unit measures 13'3" X 44' in length or for a total Unit is 585 s.f. plus the lanai which is 13'3" X 6'. There is a 3" jog in the wall by the hall closet losing approx. reducing the hallway walking space to about 3'0".

Hallway measurements: is (when you first open the door before the inside 2nd door) 3'4" X 9' and then from that second door to the living room is 3' X 17' long. Total square foot of about 81 s.f.

Master Bath is approx. 15 sq. ft. or acually 5' X 3' floor space not including the counter, toilet or the shower.

Master Bedroom is 9' 8" wide and 12' long or about 118 sq. ft. not including the closet.

Hallway Bath is: approx. 24 sq.ft. floor space not including the counter or the shower. overall interior space is 9'6" X 5'6" including the shower, toilet and vanity

Kitchen Flooring is approx: 36 s.f. but now with the kitchen and living room opened up with this center island, it appears to be and actually feels like much more room and viewing space. Actual spacing is 3'wide by 8'4"long and then in front of the water heater there is a small walkway 3' X 2'6".

Living Room Mearurements Width is 13'4 1/2" and length from kitchen to inside louvers is 16'7 1/4"

Ceiling height is 8'0" and has been sprayed with accoustic. If this is to be removed correctly, the materials must be contained and disposed of properly as it is or contains asbestos. One licensed contractor familiar with the site issues is Kehau Mendes of LKM Construction located in Kaneohe or by phone at 808-478-4503. There is a drop ceiling of 1' for the plumbing leaving a remaining height of each bathroom of 7'0". The plumbing for the unit above you is in this space.

Lanai - Every unit has a lanai. Some are ground floor others are not. Those that are ground floor do not have a railing. Those on the 2nd and 3rd floors have a railing. The measurement for this lanai is the same width as the living room 13'41/2" approx.

Blue Moon over Haleiwa Surf

Here is a photo taken from inside our unit directly over the birthing rock almost due west at about 4:30am on Dec. 30, 2009

What is a Blue Moon?There are in fact two definitions for a blue moon. According to the more recent definition, a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. For a blue moon to occur, the first of the full moons must appear at or near the beginning of the month so that the second will fall within the same month (the average span between two moons is 29.5 days).

How Often Does a Blue Moon Occur?
Over the next 20 years there will be about 15 blue moons, with an almost equal number of both types of blue moons occurring. No blue moon of any kind will occur in the years 2011, 2014, and 2017.

The more recent phenomenon, where the blue moon is considered to be the second full moon in a calendar month, last occurred on May 31, 2007. Two full moons in one month may occur in any month out of the year except for February, which is shorter than the lunar cycle.

The other, older blue moon event, which happens when there are four full moons in a season, last occured in August 2005. Since this type of blue moon is reckoned according to the seasons, it can only occur in February, May, August, or November, about a month before the equinox or the solstice.

Twice in a Blue Moon
The rare phenomenon of two blue moons (using the more recent definitition) occurring in the same year happens approximately once every 19 years. 1999 was the last time a blue moon appeared twice, in January and March.

The months of the double blue moons are almost always January and March. That is because the short month that falls in between them, February, is a key ingredient in this once-every-19-year phenomenon. For January and March to each have two full moons, it's necessary for February to have none at all. Since February is usually 28 days long, and the average span between full moons is 29.5 days, if a full moon occurs at the end of January, it's possible for the next full moon to skip February entirely and fall in the beginning of March.

Once in a Blue Moon
"Blue moon" appears to have been a colloquial expression long before it developed its calendrical senses. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first reference to a blue moon comes from a proverb recorded in 1528:

If they say the moon is blue,
We must believe that it is true.
Saying the moon was blue was equivalent to saying the moon was made of green (or cream) cheese; it indicated an obvious absurdity. In the 19th century, the phrase until a blue moon developed, meaning "never." The phrase, once in a blue moon today has come to mean "every now and then" or "rarely"—whether it gained that meaning through association with the lunar event remains uncertain.

The circumference of the moon is 6,790 lin. miles. Look how large that crater is and how far out the splash lines are! they must stretch almost 1,500 miles in each direction from the center of that crater. There are about 3,300 miles across the U.S. So that's almost all the way across the United States.

How far is the moon from the Earth?Since the moon's orbit is elliptical (oval-shaped), its distance varies from about 221,463 miles (356,334 kilometers) at perigee (closest approach to Earth) to 251,968 miles (405,503 kilometers) at apogee (farthest point). The average distance from the moon to the Earth is 238,857 miles (384,392 kilometers).

Many of the state flowers are actually trees as well -- some states have chosen the same species as state tree and as state flower. Answer: Maine designated the white pine cone and tassel as its state flower. The pine cone is the female structure that bears the seeds, and the tassel is a smaller cone-like structure that produces pollen. Botanically, both the cone and tassel are not considered flowers, but are known as strobili. You could accurately say that Maine is the only state to have an official state strobilus. If you thought Oklahoma was the right answer, you are nearly correct. Mistletoe is a plant and is not a flower. It is, however, a flowering plant and bears true flowers, even though they are not showy.

Here's Rico installing the barge rake covers while I talk with an electrical bidding contractor about another project.

A copper wire is secured to a copper nail and driven into the overhang as well as onto the ridge with a copper wire to secure the ridge, the side to side and at the facia. There are no other nails holding this bamboo roof together. The entire structure is secured with copper wire as shown here.

this is the copper tieing that was done to secure the bamboo roofing. This is a fastening system I used when installing high end japan style roofing systems where I wanted to show the exposed copper fastenng detail.

Here's a picture of what you'll see from a distance at 5:30am today on Oct. 22, 2009 We should finish the roofing today.

We had to cut copper wire in preparation to secure the bamboo to the roof.

Then we got the bright idea to Hawaiiana the roof. Rico and I went to Waimea falls to cut down some bamboo that was donated to us. We cut it and shaped it to become our new look.

Access Panel Master Bedroom bath

When any shower valve goes out in the master bathroom and it cannot be reached from the front of the shower, you may have to enter through the master bedroom closet and cut out the drywall in the closet. You will then have access to the back side of the shower. In this case, after you repair the valves, you would re-install the drywall by either installing an access panel or if the cut out required a larger than available premade access panel, you would then build a wall frame inside the closet and then frame in your own access panel.

Here is a picture of an already existing access panel from another unit. A larger picture of another type of access panel is not available. The picture is dark, but as you can see, the access panel is set to repair the shower knob valves. There would have to be another panel installed at a lower level to deal with the tub outlet.

when does the sun go behind Kaena point?

In 2009 it was on October 5 that the sun tucks itself behind Kaena Point, taking the North Shore Haleiwa sunsets with it.

In 2010 it was on October 6

In 2011 it was on October 7 but it was cloudy both nights the 6th & the 7th

Sometime between March 6 thru March 9, it will come back around where you can see the full sun setting to the right side of Kaena Point. The halfway point where the sun reaches it's most Northern setting is on June 24 when it starts heading back to Kaena Point in the West again.

The challenge is to guess exactly which day you will see the full sunset return back around Kaena Point. For 2010 will it be Saturday: March 6, Sunday: March 7, Monday: March 8 or will it be on Tuesday: March 9?

This is the "old car" sitting in front of Surf N Sea just to the right side. After checking last week, the car has finally been towed away to another rusted grave yard in a far away land.
Located in Haleiwa just across rainbow bridge. Magic Jack

Tired of paying a monthly rental fee for your land line telephone for your Condo Unit? I found a company that sells Computer Phones. The current cost is $39.95 for the hardware and $20 a year for service. You can make unlimited long distance and/or local calls and talk as long as you like for no additional charge. The first year will then average a monthly cost of $5 per month or $60 for the first year and about $1.65 a month thereafter. This includes the cost of the magic jack itself. And it can be taken with you to whatever computer you want to use it on. To my knowledge, it works nationwide.

See how you just plug the Magic Jack hardware into your USB port, either into the front or the back of your computer, then you plug your phone line from any phone you want to use into the Magic Jack. There was no disc accompanying the hardware. The Magic Jack hardware can be plugged into any computer, lap top any number of times. The only other thing you need is a cordless or landline phone to go with it. The phone sends and receives calls without issue. The only trick will be to keep people from taking it when they leave your rental unit. But maybe that's just another reason you have a security deposit.

One more important point to remember. I am not recommending the Magic Jack nor am I saying that this system is flawless. There are certainly issues.

1. You need to navagate through the system to figure out how it works
2. While you are on the phone, sometimes it shuts off.
3. Waiting for a dial tone can be frustrating.
4. After you get a dial tone, you dial your number and then there's silence, then after 3-4 seconds another dial tone sounds. You dial again and the same scenario happens.
5. Sometimes there's a kick back to your computer and your computer locks up. When this happens, simply unplug the Magic Jack and your computer should return to its former status.

Yes it is frustrating. But for the cost of $2-$5 a month, that's peanuts compared to what you are paying now. And for the most part, their system does work. I'm hoping that in time, technology will improve and this system will in fact be a useful one. You may want to go onto a review site to see what others might have found good or bad with the system.

NEW NOTE ON MAGIC JACK: WE HAVE NOW USED THIS JACK FOR ABOUT A YEAR. AND FINALLY WE FIGURED OUT THAT THE PROBLEMS WITH OUR JACK WAS NOT THE MAGIC JACK AT ALL, IT WAS THE CONNECTION TO THE USB PORT. IT WASN'T GETTING A GOOD CONNECTION. NOW IT APPEARS TO BE WORKING FLAWLESSLY AND WE LEAVE IT PLUGGED IN 24/7.

Tree stump removal

This is what needs to happen in a case of tree stump removal. Kai's Tree Service, because of friendship and a long standing relationship of good service reduced his price from $450 to $200 and instead of using only one machine, used two to speed up the removal process. It took two machines with 3 people 45 minutes to complete the job.
