Cabinets

There are any number of places you might want to go to get cabinets and sinks. For hardwood cabinets check out: Golden Cabinets on 2959 Koapaka down by the Airport. Phone 836-8181. Or there is Kirkland Cabinets in Mapunapuna. Both will fabricate your cabinets while you wait.

In the Kitchen:
The existing cavity for the over the refrigerator cabinet before the hallway wall is removed is 31 5/8"w X 29 3/8"d X 30"h Now remember there may be slight variations in your unit, but this is a typical rough dimensions of the unit I measured.

The cavity for Hot Water Heater:
The inside openings for the hot water heater, again as it was installed in 1972 without any modifications in the unit I measured was and still is: 27"w X 24"d X 33 1/2"h. The existing water heater is a 30 gallon heater which costed about $406.00 when originally purchased (without discounts). For emergency repairs and warranty issues, you should mark with bold blank pen the date your water was installed, who installed it and their phone number.

Over the Stove
The existing Cabinet over the stove is 50 3/16"w X 13 1/2"d X 35"h. There is more height space and depth space to the opening, but this is the size of the existing cabinet that is in the cavity. The entire depth of the wall is 36 3/8". Many have removed these walls in order to combine the living room with the kitchen. It is metal stud framed. Depending on the side your kitchen sink is facing will determine which wall houses the vent for the stove. Many of the units still have an overhead vent for the cooking area. Some work and some no longer work. I have not looked for any replacements for them yet since most have chosen to renovate and eliminate these vents all together. But bear in mind, you cannot remove the vent if you are on the second or third floor until both the units below you have eliminated their vents, since all three units are stacking and need to be connected in order for them to work. Units on the first floor can cap off the vent and remove them without any consideration of the other units above him.

Shower Knob

This Danco Universal knob costs $5.41 at Home Depot. Model #80024. The benefits of this knob is that the set screws are approx 1/8" - 3/16" in diameter. They're not the skinny little 1/16" allen set screws. They also has a Split outside spline grabber that not only screws in the center of the valve, it also grabs the spline outside the valve, so even when your valve is severly rounded even without splines, it will still grab.

Found this old newspaper under an access panel in a floor closet in one of the Units today.

Plumbing - Hallway Bathroom leaks

This is the 'Y' pipe. Actually it is not a Y, it is a straight pipe with a clean out attached to it. We replaced it with a 90° straight pipe on one end and a ABS straight pipe on the other.













Here's another close up of the leaks coming from the Y connection. See how they joined the pipes together in those days?







This is the straight pipe that needs to be replaced. You can also see the connections. Back in those days, cast iron pipes were used for plumbing. Nowadays we use ABS and PVC. We replaced the pipe with a length of ABS instead of going back to the cast iron. See the water dripping?


See all the active leaks coming from the pipe? Some have rumored that the use of cast iron pipes was because they were more quiet than the ABS pipes. Facts are that this was not the reason they were being used. The reason they were used is because this was the only kind of pipe available in those days. ABS did not become a plumbers favorite pipe until the mid 1970's. They are just as quiet, more cost effective, do not rust, easier to work with and are glued together instead of being strip banded. ABS = acrylonitrile-butadiene styrene I am currently looking up when it was converted from its original invention (which I think was for the airline industry because of its durability and light weight) for plumbing use and also who invented it. You gotta love being retired.

Immacule'e ilibagiza on 1-9-09









From time to time we get a guest staying at the condos that has a unique story to tell. This is one of them. Her name is Immacule'e. She is a survivor of the Rawanda Masacre and Genocide of the Tutsi tribe by the Hutu's. She has written a book entitled: "Left to Tell". It is an amazing story of one of a few survivors.
